Equipment

  • 9x13 Baking Dish
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Small Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Whisk
  • Plastic Wrap

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf FRENCH BREAD
  • 8 large EGGS
  • 2 cups HALF-AND-HALF
  • 1/2 cup GRANULATED SUGAR
  • 1 tsp VANILLA EXTRACT
  • 1/4 tsp GROUND CINNAMON
  • 1/2 lb UNSALTED BUTTER
  • 1 cup LIGHT BROWN SUGAR
  • 1 cup CHOPPED PECANS
  • 2 tbsp MAPLE SYRUP

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Slice your bread into one-inch thick cubes. Grease your baking dish with some soft butter. Place the bread cubes inside the dish now. Spread them out to cover the whole bottom.

Step 2:

  • Crack the eggs into your large mixing bowl. Add the half-and-half and the granulated sugar. Pour in the vanilla and the maple syrup. Whisk these until the mixture is very smooth.

Step 3:

  • Pour the liquid mixture over the bread cubes. Make sure you hit every piece of bread. Use a spoon to press the bread down. This helps the bread soak up the liquid.

Step 4:

  • Cover the dish tightly with your plastic wrap. Place the dish in the fridge right away. Let it sit for at least four hours. Overnight is even better for a great texture.

Step 5:

  • Start making the topping in a small bowl. Combine the butter, brown sugar, and chopped pecans. Add the cinnamon and a tiny pinch salt. Stir until it looks like a thick paste.

Step 6:

  • Take the dish out of the fridge now. Spread the praline topping over the soaked bread. Try to cover the surface as evenly as possible. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 7:

  • Bake the casserole for about forty minutes. The top should look golden and very bubbly. The center should be set and not jiggly. Remove it from the oven and let rest.

Notes

Tip 1: Use French or Challah bread for the best results.
Tip 2: Make sure the butter is soft for the topping.
Tip 3: Do not overbake or the custard will become dry.
Tip 4: Add a bit of orange zest for extra brightness.
Tip 5: Let the casserole sit for ten minutes before serving.
