Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Pastry Cutter
  • Baking Sheet
  • Rolling Pin
  • Biscuit Cutter
  • Pastry Brush
  • Measuring cups
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 2 cups SELF-RISING FLOUR
  • 1/4 cup SHORTENING
  • 3/4 cup BUTTERMILK
  • 2 tbsp MELTED BUTTER
  • 1/4 tsp SALT
  • 1 tsp SUGAR

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit now. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper. This helps with even heat and cleanup.

Step 2:

  • Place the flour in a large bowl. Add the cold shortening to the flour. Use a fork or a pastry cutter.

Step 3:

  • Mix the shortening into the flour well. The mixture should look like coarse crumbs. Do not let the shortening melt yet.

Step 4:

  • Make a small hole in the center. This is called a well for liquids. Pour the cold buttermilk into the hole.

Step 5:

  • Stir the mixture gently with a fork. Only stir until the dough just holds. Do not overmix the biscuit dough.

Step 6:

  • Place the dough on a floured surface. Dust your hands with a little flour. This stops the dough from sticking.

Step 7:

  • Fold the dough over a few times. Do this about five or six times. This creates many flaky layers inside.

Step 8:

  • Pat the dough down with your hands. It should be one-inch thickness. Use a rolling pin for a smooth top.

Step 9:

  • Cut out circles using a biscuit cutter. Press straight down into the dough. Do not twist the cutter at all.

Step 10:

  • Place biscuits on the prepared baking sheet. Let their edges touch for softer sides. This helps them rise up higher.

Step 11:

  • Bake them for twelve to fifteen minutes. Watch them closely through the oven door. They should be a light golden brown.

Step 12:

  • Brush the tops with melted butter immediately. This adds flavor and a nice glow. Serve them while they are still warm.

Notes

  • Use very cold butter for the best layers.
  • Do not twist the cutter when making shapes.
  • Preheat the oven fully before you start baking.
  • Handle the dough as little as possible now.
  • Use fresh buttermilk for a better rising dough.
  • Measure your flour using the spoon and level method.
  • Make sure your shortening is fresh and cool.
  • Space biscuits apart for crispy edges if preferred.
  • Cold ingredients lead to much fluffier biscuits.
  • Store your flour in a cool dry place.
