Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • 9x13 Baking Dish
  • Whisk
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp Knife

Ingredients

  • 1 lb BREAKFAST SAUSAGE
  • 8 cups WHITE BREAD CUBES
  • 2 cups CHEDDAR CHEESE
  • 8 large EGGS
  • 2 cups WHOLE MILK
  • 1 tsp DRY MUSTARD
  • $1/2$ tsp SALT
  • $1/4$ tsp BLACK PEPPER
  • 1 tbsp BUTTER

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Grease your baking dish with a little butter. Spread it evenly on the bottom and sides. This prevents the casserole from sticking to glass.

Step 2:

  • Place your meat in the large skillet now. Cook the sausage over medium heat until brown. Crumble the meat into small pieces while cooking.

Step 3:

  • Cut your bread into small one-inch cubes. Layer the bread cubes in the greased dish. Make sure they cover the entire bottom area.

Step 4:

  • Drain the excess fat from your cooked sausage. Sprinkle the warm sausage over the bread cubes. Distribute the meat evenly across the whole dish.

Step 5:

  • Add a thick layer of shredded cheddar cheese. Cover the meat and bread completely with cheese. This creates a gooey center for the meal.

Step 6:

  • Crack your eggs into the large mixing bowl. Add the milk and the dry mustard powder. Whisk them until the yellow color is uniform.

Step 7:

  • Pour the egg mixture over the layers slowly. Ensure every piece of bread is fully soaked. Let it sit for ten minutes before baking.

Step 8:

  • Place the dish in a preheated oven now. Bake at 350 degrees for forty-five minutes. The top should be golden brown and firm.

Notes

Use stale bread to prevent a soggy casserole base.
Brown the sausage very well for a deeper flavor.
Let the casserole rest for five minutes before slicing.
You can swap sausage for crispy chopped bacon strips.
Add diced green peppers for a fresh vegetable crunch.
